Baptiste Buob joined the CNRS in 2010. Educated in both anthropology and cinema, he usually conducts his research camera in hand, and uses the film as another form of publication alongside the written word. Through his research and lectures, he works to promote the full integration of the power of the camera into ethnographic studies. The book La dinanderie de Fès, a revised version of his PhD thesis accompanied by four films, is an example of what is possible when these different types of knowledge access are combined. He employed a similar approach for a filmed ethnographic study of apprenticeship and transmission in the instrument-making trades of Vosges.

«Hommes et objets de la dinanderie de Fès» (B. Buob)

In Morocco, building on his PhD thesis on artisan techniques, he is currently exploring the immediate destiny of artisanal articles through their commercialisation. He is questioning the commercialisation process at work in the course of commercial transactions, and is more generally establishing the foundations of an anthropology of the tourism economy. In a completely different field, he is beginning to research extreme sports, and intends to undertake an ethnography of skydiving practices.

Combining audio-visual productions and scientific texts, Baptiste Buob’s work concerns not just the study of mankind, but also ways of presenting it through images.
