From 1975 to 1989, her field research concerned the Newari language, religious anthropology, the worship and iconography of local divinities in Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism. A number of articles deal relations between social organisations, such as lineage associations, and the worship of different divinities.
One of the features of Newar civilisation being its urban character, her research took place in the town of Bhaktapur, a former royal capital. The religious and social organisation of Bhaktapur town territory showed the distribution of Hindu and Buddhist temples, the relationship between political and religious centre and periphery, as well as the hierarchy of divinities during festivals and rituals. Combining anthropology and history, her study on royalty of the Malla period (1200-1768) discussed the question of the integration of Buddhists into the Hindu kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley.

In various publications on the anthropology of art, she has shown the links between society and artistic creation, between image and ritual as well as the role images, including the mandala, in religious practices.
Research conducted in Western Rajasthan concerned the clans and genealogies of the ancient warrior caste (Rajput), Hindu royalty and relations with local goddesses as well as the worship of Rajput heroes and marriage rituals.
Some of her publications are the result of her participation in different research teams, including: ATP Polythéisme, Pour une anthropologie des sociétés anciennes et traditionnelles (For an Anthropology of Ancient and Traditional Societies); UPR 249, L’hindouisme : textes, doctrine, pratique (Hinduism: Texts, Doctrine, Practice).
