Les recherches menées par le laboratoire Préhistoire et Technologie (UMR 7055) visent principalement à reconstituer les systèmes socio-économiques du passé et à en comprendre les mécanismes d’évolution. Elles s’ancrent dans l’approche technologique, voie privilégiée pour l’identification des faits techno-économiques et leur interprétation en termes socio-culturels.

Cette approche s’est développée en France et en Europe depuis plus de 30 ans, en particulier sous l’impulsion de l’UMR 7055, par ses recherches, publications et actions de formation. Elle continue de jouer un rôle de 1er plan dans la réflexion méthodologique et théorique, qui touche aussi bien aux règles de construction des référentiels actualistes, qu’à l’élargissement de la technologie à des matériaux divers (lithique, céramique, matières dures animales, métallurgique), ou encore aux cadres théoriques pour traiter des changements observables au cours de la Préhistoire. En effet, l’autre grande richesse du laboratoire est d’associer des chercheurs spécialistes de la Préhistoire la plus ancienne, à -2.5 MA en Afrique, à la Préhistoire la plus récente, l’Age du Fer en Europe. Ce regroupement permet une approche comparative sur les modes d’organisation anciens et leur évolution.

Le laboratoire constitue l’équipe d’accueil principale des étudiants de l’Université Paris Ouest-Nanterre-La Défense issus de la filière Préhistoire (ici spécialisation du cursus général d’Ethnologie) souhaitant poursuivre des recherches en technologie pré et proto-historique, au sein de l’Ecole doctorale "Milieux, cultures et sociétés du passé et du présent" (ED 395 « MCSPP »). Il compte, en mars 2011, 26 doctorants.

L’UMR 7055 Préhistoire et Technologie, créée début 1999, est l’une des 4 UMR de la Maison René Ginouvès ou Maison de l’Archéologie et de l’Ethnologie (MAE), sise sur le campus de l’Université Paris Ouest à Nanterre. Evaluée en 2008, l’UMR a été notée A+ par l’AERES et a reçu un avis « très favorable au renouvellement de l’unité » par la section 31 du Comité national de la recherche scientifique (CoNRS). Elle dépend de l’InSHS (Institut national des Sciences Humaines et Sociales du CNRS).

About the “Prehistory and Technology” research laboratory (UMR 7055)

The general research topic of the “Prehistory and technology” research laboratory ( UMR 7055 of the CNRS / University Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense) is designed primarily to reconstruct the socio-economic systems of the past and understand their mechanisms of evolution. These investigations are rooted in the technological approach, which is the route for the identification of techno-economic facts and their interpretation in socio-cultural terms.

This approach was developed in France and Europe 30 years ago, particularly under the impetus of the UMR 7055, through its research, publications and training activities. Our lab continues to play a role in the first methodological and theoretical reflection, both by “actualistic” data bases (experimental and ethnoarchaeological) by expanding its technological expertise to various materials (lithic, ceramic, bone and other animal hard materials, metal) and theoretical frameworks to deal with changes observed during prehistory. Indeed, connecting researchers specialized in the most ancient prehistory from -2.5 MA in Africa- to the most recent, the Iron Age in Europe is another strength of our lab. This grouping allows a comparative approach to the methods of organization and evolution.

The laboratory is the main home team for students from the University Paris Ouest-Nanterre-La Défense specializing in Prehistory (within the general cursus of Ethnology) who are wishing to pursue research in pre and proto-historic technology within the Graduate School "Media, Culture and Society of Past and Present" (ED 395 "MCSPP). It has, in March 2011, 26 doctoral students.
